This was taken on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls with the D70 and the kit lens. It was close to dusk the digital camera allowed me to boost the ISO to get this picture.

Digital

The die is cast I will be doing mostly digital. I find sharing with family and friends on line to be so convenient that I haven't shot film in 6 months. This is from Puerto Rico taken with the D70 and the 18 to 70 kit lens.

This is a scan from 1989. It is old technology an OM2n with the a 50mm f1.8 lens on Kodachrome 64 film. It is taken in Valley Forge on Washington's Birthday. It was bitter cold. I was able to jump in and out of the nice warm car.

This old lens was single coated. I always liked this shot the color was good. Kodachrome was a great film before we had the saturated colors of Velvia it was condsidered high contrast and had vivid colors.

This was shot with Yashicamat 124 on Fuji NPH film. It a very early in year small snow storm and everything came together. I enjoy the square format even though I don't have any mediun format cameras at this time

Scans

This is a scan of a slide from 20 years ago of the Walt Whitman bridge between NJ and Philly. It has the pluses and minuses of using film and scanning. The argument for film is its permanence. We know that film stored properly will last for at least 100 years and the storage medium will be still be valid. Digital files stored on hard drives or CD's/ DVD's might not be readable in a few years time. How many of us can still open files on a floppy disk. The down side of scanning is dust and time. This slide had dirt and dust on it. I did some spotting with the clone tool which is a tedious process. This was taken with my Olympus OM2n and a cheap 300mm mirror lens. I know it not sharp but L like it because it has atmosphere.

This is from a slide. I don't remeber the camera or lens. I know it was with a Nikon but I can't remember which body or lens. The film was Ektacrome 100 VS.

Back to it

I have been busy and haven't had a chance to post anything new. This is the Cape May NJ lighthouse. This is from my D70. I am traveling for work the next few days. I hope to make a few scans when I get back

I was out of town this weekend. My wife and I were in Margate NJ. This is a picture of us in front of Lucy the Margate Elephant. It was taken with my Nikon D70. Digital is great for quick sharing of photos.

This is a scan from a slide. The film was Velvia 100F but the scanner is an Epson flat bed. I don't own a dedicated film scanner that would maximize my scans. Film sales are down and we don't know what the future brings for film users. My guess is that we will be a niche market much like vinyl records are after CD's.

This is a digital picture from the same session. Digital is very seductive you have the ability to review as you go. When you get home you can download and manipulate the images a very immediate involvement soon after taking the picture. Digital is taking the world by storm but film still has advantages. One film advantage is storage I know that 20 years from now I will be able to look at my slides on a light table. Digital storage media is still evolving much like emuslions back in the late 1800's.

My first rambling

This is a blog about my photographic life. I have been to much of a gear head buying and selling cameras. I use mostly Nikons but vacillate between auto focus and manual focus also between film and digital. I have also bought and sold several medium format bodies. I am trying to focus pun intended on what type of photography I want to create. Years ago I used to wander around with an Olympus ON2n and a 50mm lens. It seems like I enjoyed myself more with less equipment. I find digital to fun but worry about permanance. The pic is our dog Fluffy out in the rain
